Although the materials and the methods of making dentures have improved over the years, the basic premise remains the same: dentures rest on top of your gums, have a part that replicates the gums, and include multiple prosthetic teeth. Whether through a partial or full appliance, dentures allow those who have suffered part or even total tooth loss to regain function in their mouths. At Carlsbad Beach Dental, Dr. Addy and our dedicated team are proud to provide dentures to our patients.
Often, tooth loss is nothing more nor less than the luck of the draw – it is genetic. If one or both of your parents had bad teeth, then there is a good chance that you will also suffer from tooth decay. You could also end up losing teeth due to a blow to the mouth during an athletic event or in a traffic accident. In the end, though, the cause really does not matter. What does matter is that you need to have your mouth restored to the point where you can chew effectively and look good again.
The sort of dentures you will need will depend on how many of your teeth are missing. If it is just a few teeth, you should be fine with a partial denture. If many teeth are missing, or if your teeth are in bad enough shape that you are likely to need more extractions in the near future, then you might be better off having all your teeth taken out and get fitted with full dentures. If you dislike the idea of having to take out your dentures to clean them, then you could consider implant-retained dentures, which are permanently fixed into place by attaching to dental implants. Just keep in mind that they are, however, more expensive than removable dentures.
