What is Sedation Dentistry?

At Carlsbad Beach Dental, Drew Addy DDS, we offer several luxurious amenities for your optimal comfort and relaxation, including TVs, music, comfortable chairs, and a relaxing spa-like environment, but sometimes that isn’t always enough to alleviate a patient’s anxieties and fears regarding dental treatments. If you’re anxious about dental treatments, we offer various anesthetic and sedation dentistry options to help you relax and enjoy your treatment. The anesthesia ensures physical comfort, and sedation dentistry ensures mental comfort.

What's involved in Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry involves using medications to help you relax during dental treatments. There are several forms of sedation dentistry options with different levels of consciousness. Minimal sedation options help you relax while staying wide awake. Moderate sedation options help you relax and make you sleepy, though you’re still awake.

Deep sedation options bring you to the edge of consciousness, but you can be awakened easily, and general anesthesia is also called “sleep dentistry” because you’re completely unconscious.

Carlsbad Beach Dental, Drew Addy DDS, offers some of the most effective sedation dentistry options, including nitrous oxide sedation, oral sedation, and IV sedation.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide, popularly known as “laughing gas,” is one of the most popular sedation dentistry options. It’s a gas that’s simply inhaled through a mask to induce a pleasurable and lightheaded feeling. Nitrous oxide is a fast-acting gas that works in seconds after the inhalation and then leaves your body just as fast, allowing you to drive back from the clinic. Nitrous oxide reduces pain response, increases relaxation, produces a tingling and warm sensation in your body, and makes you groggy.

Benefits of Nitrous Oxide Sedation

  • Convenient, no needles
  • Takes effect within seconds
  • Extremely safe, rare side effects
  • Suitable for most people
  • Leaves the system instantly
  • Feels good

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation refers to medications taken orally to alleviate anxiety and distress. You’ll be asked to take the oral medications approximately one hour before the procedure because they take a while to work. Oral sedation leaves you wide awake and aware of your surroundings, but you feel comfortable, relaxed, safe, and free from anxieties. Some patients feel sleepy or groggy and often drift into a gentle sleep during the procedure. However, the primary goal of oral sedation isn’t to put you to sleep but simply relieve your anxiety.

Benefits of Oral Sedation

  • Convenient, no needles
  • Extremely safe, rare side effects
  • Suitable for complex treatments

IV Sedation

IV sedation is the type of sedation dentistry wherein medications are delivered into your body intravenously. It calms your nerves, relieves anxieties, and lulls you into a gentle sleep, which is why it’s often called “twilight sleep.” You’ll still be able to respond to the dentist, but you might not have complete recollection of the procedure later. IV sedation induces a deep sense of relaxation, and it’s suitable for more complex procedures than nitrous oxide sedation. The level of sedation can also be adjusted through the procedure.

Benefits of IV Sedation

  • Works faster than most sedation options
  • Extremely safe, rare side effects
  • Sedation level can be altered easily
  • Suitable for advanced procedures
  • You forget most of the procedure details
