Carlsbad Dental Inlays & Onlays

What are Inlays & Onlays?

Dental inlays and onlays are restorative components that strengthen and preserve teeth with dental cavities or decay. In most cases, dental cavities are sealed and treated with fillings, but that’s not always possible. Inlays and onlays are suitable alternatives for cavities too large for fillings but not large enough for crowns. Dr. Addy provides the most conservative treatment possible, which is why he favors inlays and onlays instead of crowns when possible.

What are Inlays & Onlays?

Inlays are dental restorations placed between the cusps on the top of your teeth. They often repair large surfaces of the back teeth when fillings aren’t deemed sufficient. Onlays are larger dental restorations that reach between one or more of the cusps of your teeth. They repair large dental cavities in the central part of the teeth or the cusps. The only significant differences between inlays and onlays are their placement location and size.

Same-Day Inlays & Onlays with CEREC Technology

Carlsbad Beach Dental, Drew Addy DDS, stays abreast of the latest technologies and techniques to provide the most effective and convenient restoration options. Our dental clinic is outfitted with CEREC technology to provide same-day dental restorations in a single session. Traditional inlays and onlays have to be prepared in a dental laboratory after the dentist sends the impressions of your teeth. As such, the traditional dental restoration takes two sessions — the impression and the fitting.

Thanks to CEREC technology, we can provide inlays and onlays in a single session. CEREC is a cutting-edge technology that facilitates the fabrication of ceramic restorations in 15 to 20 minutes. We use 3D scanning technologies to take the necessary impressions, input the information into the computer-aided design (CAD) and the computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software, and produce the restorations. Once the restoration is prepared, we attach the inlays and onlays in place during the same session.

Metal-Free Inlays & Onlays

Carlsbad Beach Dental, Drew Addy DDS, is a metal-free dental clinic that provides natural-looking and durable restorations. We use CEREC technology to produce all-ceramic inlays and onlays that restore your teeth and dental health with the most natural restores. Ceramic has the same color, texture, and translucency as enamel, i.e., the outer layer of the teeth, making it the ideal choice of material. Dr. Addy also adjusts the shade to ensure it accurately matches the surrounding teeth.

CEREC Inlays & Onlays Benefits

  • The entire process concludes in a single session
  • Digital impressions are far more comfortable than traditional dental molds
  • Ceramic inlays and onlays look just like natural teeth
  • CEREC restorations are incredibly strong and durable
  • Preserves most of the original dental surface
  • Far more conservative than dental crowns
  • Resistant to abrasion

CEREC Inlays & Onlays: Procedure

Your inlays and onlays procedure will start with an initial consultation — Dr. Addy will carefully examine the affected teeth and take the necessary X-rays to check the level of damage. You’ll be considered an eligible candidate for inlays and onlays if your dental cavities are too big for fillings but not big enough to require crowns. Dr. Addy always opts to preserve your natural dental structure when possible. After the examination, he will design the ideal restoration plan.

The procedure will start with digital impressions. Dr. Addy will take images of the tooth that needs the inlays and onlays. The impressions will be transferred to the unique CEREC-based computer software, where Dr. Addy will make the necessary adjustments to the design for the restoration. The machine will produce the inlays and onlays in 15 to 20 minutes, which will be attached to the affected teeth. Dr. Addy might make some final adjustments to ensure they blend with the surrounding teeth.

You can leave the dental clinic immediately after the procedure.
